Sufjan Stevens
I found Sufjan while listening to "This Bird Has Flown: A 40th Anniversary Tribute To The Beatles' Rubber Soul" on which he performs "What Goes On". It's a really intriguing cover and my hopes were elevated to find the next Dr. Dog.
Alas, he's really rather emo. But produced the way I imagine George Martin might have as a toddler. Very repetitive arrangements with little subtlety, but very nice instrumentation and the raw ideas are quite cool. But I couldn't help thinking "he's really a christian rock dude who crosses over to the cool". SURE ENOUGH! He has a bunch of xmas covers out there and the lord permeates his songs...heavily.
So I'll keep his Rubber Soul cover and leave the rest.
